I always loved music as a kid. Being a child of the early eighties, my first memory was hearing Glen Frey belting out “The Heat Is On” while my mom had a good laugh at watching her baby rock out to the blazing saxophone on that classic record! I had always been fascinated by the piano and organ. My dad had an old beat up Wurlitzer upright piano that was my official introduction to the instrument. It didn’t play all that well, but it had soul! I attended church growing up and was practically mesmerized by the sound and the complicated looking controls that Mrs. Jennings, our music director, played flawlessly every Sunday on the organ.
I started playing in bands right after high school, and have been doing that in some capacity since. Popular music became a full time pursuit around 2019 And I’ve been the keyboard player and background and occasional lead vocalist for Electric Soul Therapy, Crossfire Creek, and now Mrs. Red Band.
Eventually, I took advantage of the music classes available at Seminole Community College, and later Rollins College where I learned music theory, and piano, organ, and voice lessons while playing in various bands or just by myself wherever I could. After college, I gained around 10 years experience as a full time church organist, choir director, and vocalist supplementing that with popular music gigs regularly.
My approach to teaching is to try and pass on what works and filter out what doesn’t. My goal is to take the guesswork out of learning how to play or sing, and show my students how much fun it can be, and also the value of hard work and discipline. The secret is to take one “nugget” of information at a time and keep building on that. Each step along the way has fun challenges, and will give them a sense of accomplishment and self confidence.
I teach all keyboard instruments including piano, organ, and synthesizers in most styles including classical and popular music in a solo context or in a band. If you want to learn to sing lead or background in popular styles, I’d be happy to show you what I know!
Raymond Nathan has been a drum teacher at Music Matters for 17 years! He is a self-taught drummer and percussionist, musician, and entertainer. Born in Montreal, Canada, he started playing drums at 5 AM on Christmas day when he was eight years old. At fourteen, his dreams, life, focus, and attention all changed on Sunday, February 9, 1964 at 6 PM, when he first saw The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show. At that moment, he knew what he wanted to be, and was manically driven to be just like Ringo!
After another six years of following his dreams and passion, most importantly with hard work, dedication and focus in spite of enduring personal sacrifices and overcoming the numerous barriers of life's hurdles, he had already managed to tour around the world once, playing drums for some of the world's most popular international BIG NAME bands, acts, and personalities.
Raymond has performed on some of the world's biggest and most prestigious stages, stadiums, opera houses, night clubs, cruise ships, and show bars. He continued to travel the globe performing across Canada, the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania, the Philippines, Japan, Papua New Guinea, and every possible exotic island and tourist resort in the Pacific Ocean.
As a result, due to his hectic, busy lifestyle, he forgot to have kids of his own. Subsequently, his life's career mission, dreams, and focus have now been directed toward today's youth. As a drum teacher at Music Matters, he would feel greatly fulfilled and rewarded if just one of his students went on to fulfill their dreams and have the same blessed life and experiences as a world class drummer, musician, and entertainer as he.
Raymond has been married to his beautiful wife Cathy, who is a wonderful human being, for 36 years.
